In my practice I am responding to the primary motifs as real, gradually enticing life, light and movement into the work; endeavouring to keep the work open and spontaneous as long as possible. I have continued to work with this approach in my paintings of Wild Dogs, Bulls, Cows and other symbols of primal power or presence.
These paintings are direct and engage the viewer. Dogs have a long term relationship with our species, and more personally my self. They are a metaphor for human beings and our journey through life. They are decorative, individual, scarred and possess a physical confidence. These works address issues of freedom and presence.
My compositions are designed to create tension and rhythm. My colour schemes have a symbolic language: earth colours represent the elements while the primaries represent light and its spectrum. A mixture of surface finishes and linear marks create a variety of visual stimulation. The formal qualities I use aim to effect the viewer; to make them feel they are in the presence of something human, something authentic and something very rare.
