Artist's Statement

I draw inspiration from everywhere, but particularly from art and literature of the past. I try to reconcile these cultural interests with the world around me and my everyday experiences. As a visual artist I am very much concerned with making things I haven't seen before, things that have the potential to surprise but the capacity to resonate.

Increasingly my work focuses on the nature of creativity itself and in this sense is very personal and somewhat introspective. However, in approaching this topic I am forced to think about artistic influence and inspiration (and even copyright) which has such an extrinsic quality. My art books are and will always be a direct source of learning and inspiration for me but the baggage of art history and it's myriad images makes it impossible for an artist to look at a motif without the influence of those significant artists who've helped shape the way we see it. This idea underpins these creations and provides me the opportunity to engage directly with those artists who inspire me the most, to tackle my influences head-on and translate their work (no matter their style) into my own language. It also allows me to set up the confrontation of abstract and representational work by their juxtaposition, forcing non-representational imagery into a figurative context and allowing their flatness and perspective to struggle together.

In a sense, art and paint are the subject of this work.
